Abstract

Purpose. The acceleration of climate change has been accompanied by an increase in extreme weather events in recent years. This article aims to analyse the relationship between climate change and meteorology in the Spanish press. Methodology. The study is based on editorial articles published in the newspapers El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and Expansión between 2020 and 2023. These media outlets were chosen because they have been studied by several observatories: Media Climate Change Observatory (MeCCO, University of Colorado), Observatorio de la Comunicación del Cambio Climático (OCCC, Complutense University of Madrid) and ReCambia (University of Seville). Results. It has been demonstrated that there has indeed been an increase in the presence of meteorological issues in climate communication in two areas: in the total number of editorials per year and in the percentage of total editorials. The political framework stands out as the most prominent, followed by the economic and scientific frameworks; and the most frequently addressed topics were droughts, fires and rising sea and ocean temperatures. Original contribution. First, the study examines how meteorology linked to climate change is addressed through different variables and verifies that meteorology is becoming increasingly prominent in communications on climate change. The study shows that communication and journalism are fundamental in disseminating this reality.
