Abstract

Objectives: The article examines how Latin American political and institutional actors joined the non-electoral viral dynamics of Ibai’s Breakfast World Cup on TikTok and the resources they used to articulate national identity and algorithmic participation, while also considering the implications that these mechanisms may offer for climate communication on digital platforms. Methodology: An exploratory-descriptive mixed-methods study was conducted on 13 posts published between 28 August and 13 September 2025 by accounts from Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Chile. The analysis combines the coding of variables related to type of actor, calls to action, the discursive function of gastronomic emblems, national pride, and adaptation to TikTok’s expressive codes with the recording of views, likes, comments, and shares, as well as the descriptive calculation of the engagement rate. Results: The results show that gastronomy functions as an emblem of national belonging and that visible interactions can be discursively reframed as forms of collective support. Likewise, some of the highest engagement rates coincide with posts that more closely adopt the platform’s native codes. Conclusions: The study characterizes these practices as a form of informal political communication based on identity, affect, and low-friction participation, whose mechanisms raise relevant questions for the development of climate communication strategies adapted to platform logics.
